2018-2019 Oregon Battle of the Books

The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant.  Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.

OBOB’s mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students. Here are details of the 2018-19 programs happening at all three Brookings-Harbor School District schools:

Kalmiopsis Elementary School  

  • 20 teams (approximately 75 students) will be battling it out for the school championship.
  • Elimination battles will be held February 4-7 in the library (Daily battles will be held Monday, 2/4 -Thursday 2/7 and Weds. 2/13 -Friday, 2/15 @ 8:30 am, 12:45 pm and 1:30 pm).
  • Round 2 battles will be February 13-14 in the library.
  • Finals will be February 15th :  12:45-1:55 pm in the Kalmiopsis gym.
  • Family and friends are welcome to come support their students for any of the battles. 
  • The after-school class was a huge success, averaging 60-70 at each session.  
  • School winner goes to Regionals March 16

Azalea Middle School

  • 7 teams (26 students) will be battling it out for the school championship.
  • Elimination battles will be held on Tuesday, February 19 (up through 3rd and 4th places)
  • Finals (for 1st and 2nd)  will be March 1st:  2:51-3:20 in the library
  • School winner goes to Regionals March 9th 

Brookings-Harbor High School

  • First year ever for high school competing
  • 3 teams (11 students) will be battling it out for the school championship.
  • Elimination battles will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and Thursday, Feb. 14 (2:30 and 3 p.m.) in the library (possible last day of battles, depending on results)
  • Tie-breaker battle (if needed), 2 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the BHHS library.
  • School winner goes to Regionals March 16
