Dear KSchool Families,

Brookings-Harbor School District is considering a shift to additional in-person learning hours for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Please share your input on the proposed changes in this survey.
Oregon Department of Education recently updated its physical distancing requirements in classrooms from 6 feet to 3 feet under certain conditions. We are reviewing the updated guidelines for opportunities to increase learning time and checking in with families to see if they would prefer maintaining the current morning or afternoon "half-day" model of approximately 3 hours of instruction 4 days per week (M/T/Th/F), or want to transition to an in-person "expanded day" of approximately 5 hours of instruction 5 days per week (M,T,W,Th,F) for the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year.

Either way, our school will continue to follow all required health and safety protocols – the wearing of masks, hand washing, sanitizing, and contact tracing and quarantining. Our online option (Brookings-Harbor Online Academy) will remain available.

If you would like to participate, please complete and submit this survey by 5 p.m. Sunday, April 11. Please submit just one response per household.

There are considerations and potential impacts of either approach:
Transition to "Expanded Day" Option
(approximately 5 hours per day in-person instruction Monday - Friday)
Maintain Hybrid Half-Days Option
(approximately 3 hours per day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays)
Learning time: Maximizes in-person learning for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year as allowed by state and local conditions. Learning time: Continues half-day of in-person instruction
In-person class time increases from the current model from approximately 12 hours per week to 25 hours per week. Morning and afternoon student groups combine into one daily schedule. Maintains morning or afternoon groups.
May require reassigning some students to a new classroom teacher to comply with distancing guidelines school wide. Schedule, class groups, and teachers stay consistent for the remainder of the school year; maintains current routines set by families, students, and teachers.
With more students participating in recess, and less physical distancing in class, there is a risk that COVID quarantines will be more extensive (possibly causing a whole grade to quarantine rather than a single classroom or cohort). Based on experience and data, the impact of a positive COVID case typically results in a small number of students being quarantined
Due to space constraints, we may not be able to accommodate requests from BHOA families to switch from online to in-person for the remainder of the school year.
